Overview

Ruth trained at RADA, and has played leading and substantial supporting roles in theatre, film, opera and radio throughout her career. Most recently she played the lead in Crooked Dances for the RSC,Zach Busner in the Arcola stage adaptation of Will Self’s Great Apes, and Hester in the acclaimed revival of Equus at Stratford East. On screen the role of Jessica in Lisa Gornick’s film The Book of Gabriel. Other highlights include playing Ariel in The Tempest (Barbican, BITE Festival); Gertrude in Hamlet (Riverside Studios, LIFT Festival); and Cosima Wagner in the opera Wagner Dream (Barbican). Personal favourites include The Girl on the Sofa (dir. Tomas Ostermeier, Edinburgh International Festival); Martin Yesterday (dir. Marianne Elliott, Royal Exchange Theatre); Live Like Pigs (dir. Katie Mitchell, Royal Court Theatre); with Polly Teale, The House of Bernarda Alba (Young Vic) and Uganda (NT Studio/Royal Court); and the all-female production of Damon and Pythius (dir. Gaynor McFarlane, Globe). Ruth has a fine mezzo-soprano voice, which she exercises daily when encouraging her errant children down to breakfast.
